Plant Safety & Environmental Systems Leadership

Role Overview

Our client is seeking a leader for Plant Safety & Environmental Systems to provide technical safety, health, and environmental compliance support to a wood products manufacturing mill. This is a hands-on, on-the-floor role for a practitioner who can build and continually improve mill safety systems, partner with plant leadership, and drive compliance with federal and state regulations.

The successful candidate will own written safety and health programs, lead training and process reviews, manage OSHA and EPA reporting, and be a visible, trusted EHS resource across the mill.

What You'll Do

  • Provide technical safety, health, and environmental compliance support to mill personnel.
  • Prepare and maintain written safety and health programs and policies.
  • Identify mill safety training needs and develop and coordinate safety training programs.
  • Participate in process reviews including hazard analyses, Operator Training, ZES/Lockout, and New Hire Orientation.
  • Support the development, implementation, and execution of mill policies.
  • Identify opportunities and support implementation of engineering controls to minimize or eliminate safety, health, and environmental hazards.
  • Continually evaluate safety systems to ensure they remain current and thorough as equipment and processes change.
  • Support plant leadership (Supervisors, Superintendents) through documentation feedback, closing the loop with employees, and serving as a training resource.
  • Confirm that systems and policies are in place, being adhered to, and functioning properly through records review and on-the-floor physical observation.
  • Conduct general EHS observations including guarding audits, At-Risk observations, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) verification, Safe Work Practices reviews, employee hazard recognition coaching, basic electrical safety inspections, and audits of monthly/quarterly inspections (ladders, hand tools, extension cords).
  • Manage safety and environmental recordkeeping and reporting (federal, state, and internal). Continually evolve and improve in-house recordkeeping.
  • Build, develop, and continually improve mill safety systems.
  • Lead by example, hold self and all employees accountable for working safely, and drive consistent results.
  • Solicit input from all personnel for continual improvement of mill safety and compliance outcomes.
  • Educate personnel to help them grow in their roles and understand their part in driving better business and safety results.
  • Execute on and uphold company policies, ensuring consistency in application.

What We're Looking For

  • High School diploma or GED, with at least 5 years of EHS experience, preferably in a wood products manufacturing environment
  • Familiarity with Federal OSHA, EPA, and other federal recordkeeping and reporting requirements
  • Familiarity with State of Georgia regulatory reporting (Workers Compensation, EPD, DNR)
  • Hands-on experience with Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), hazard analyses, safety audits, and incident investigation
  • Direct, on-the-floor plant experience partnering with supervisors and operations leadership
  • Demonstrated experience building, owning, and improving mill or plant safety systems
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to develop people
  • Competence with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
  • Servant-leader mindset; customer-focused, results-driven, with a continuous improvement mentality
  • Ability to plan, solve problems, and make sound decisions
  • Leadership courage to drive change
